Support An Open WIndow, part of the 2011 Ithaca Alternative Gift Fair
Saturday, December 3, 2011
10:00 AM to 6:00 PM

First Presbyterian Church and First Baptist Church, DeWitt Park, Ithaca, New York
An Open WIndow is participating in this year’s Ithaca Alternative Gift Fair on Saturday December 3.

The Ithaca Alternative Gift Fair offers an opportunity to give charitable donations as holiday gifts for friends and relatives. The Fair will be held from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, Saturday, December 3, at the First Presbyterian Church, 315 North Cayuga Street and the First Baptist Church, 309 N. Cayuga St. More than 60 organizations will be represented and each gift you buy comes with a free greeting card and an insert about the organization you are supporting. All of the money collected at the Fair goes directly to the participating organizations. An Open Window display will be located in the First Presbyterian Church, booth # 27.

The "gifts" An Open WIndow are offering are:

"Drawing by Gauguin"

$5 donation enables 3 inmates to receive a packet of art curriculum (exercises, art history lessons) in an "Art-Through-The-Mail" project with Prisoner's Express (a literary newsletter through Cornell University printing the writings of inmates that is mailed to 2000 inmates nationwide) This art project allows lessons to be sent to them and for the inmate to return those lessons back to An Open WIndow for critique;

Painting by Frida Kahlo

$15 donation provides color copies of artwork from various traditions for an entire art class taught at various prisons. These color copies are used to teach art and to introduce a broad view of art . The color copy artwork is kept by the inmate;

drawing by TZ

$20 donation goes to supporting the framing of paintings to be donated to a hospice unit of a men's prison or for the framing of paintings to be donated to a gym in a men's prison. The artwork in the gym has the additional cost of needing to be covered with lexan (durable plexiglass).

drawing by incarcerated person

$ - an open ended donation to support the overall projects of An Open Window.

These paintings support the idea that the quality of place sustains the quality of its inhabitants.
One inmate told me how he liked some of the 47 paintings that I donated to his prison, some he did not. He continued saying how he has been in prison since 17 years of age and was now 50. He is serving life without parole. He grew up with these men, many of whom he described as "....really hardened guys. They are not interested in art, in music, in anything. But I have seen these men affected by the artwork you have donated, and I have to admit, that truly amazes me."

Of course, donating to projects for inmates raises complicated questions
.... and it is unlikely the world will ever start a campaign to "trick or treat" for inmates. However, in the keen observation of someone; we are the sum total of everyone and everything we have ever encountered. At the same time, sustaining any notion of freedom asks that all individuals take responsibility for his/her actions.
Likewise, the ecological movement has taught us that we are all connected; we are what we throw away. This project asks that we apply this understanding to human beings.

We hope to see you at the Fair. It’s a wonderful way to learn about our community, share holiday cheer with others, support An Open Window, and give meaningful gifts that have less impact on the environment.
If you are unable to attend in person, gifts will be available online after the Fair through the website www.ithacaaltgiftfair.org.

Or you may make the donation through this page.
Thank you
